About Charleston

Known as the Jewel of the South, the peninsula city of Charleston is beautifully situated between two rivers (The Ashley and The Cooper) and the Charleston harbor. Founded in 1670 by a group of Colonists from England, this city was originally named Charles Town after King Charles. As one of America’s oldest cities, Charleston’s rich history has been wonderfully preserved offering modern day visitors a glimpse into a bygone era. Whether you are a Civil War buff, beachcomber, golfer or food aficionado, Charleston offers something of interest for everyone. The unique architecture of the antebellum mansions along the Battery demands a leisurely stroll on the raised walkway skirting the waterfront and leading to White Point Garden (The Battery), where monuments commemorate people and events of historical significance to Charleston.  Declared as a haven for religious tolerance, there are an abundance of churches. With a myriad of spires defining the skyline, Charleston is still referred to as the “Holy City”.   From its role in the Revolution to its Lowcountry Plantations, there is much to explore from Charleston’s colonial era. Today Charleston is gaining increasing popularity for its role in art and culinary circles. Home of Spoleto USA, Piccolo Spoleto, the Art and Antiques Fair and the Food and Wine Festival, Charleston draws visitors from around the world. While these annual events take place in the spring, ample opportunity exists to experience cultural events, arts, entertainment, and fine dining throughout the year. For a sampling of what is available during your visit in Charleston, refer to our “upcoming events” and “on-going activities” pages.
